All you need is an internet-connected device. Today you are probably already using your smartphone or your tablet for a 10 minute online shopping or meal preparation, maybe even a 10 minute workout.
If you can do these sorts of stuff in such a little time, you can definitely do a 10 minute online volunteering action during your lunch break or before going to bed. A simple and low effort action, promoted by nonprofits, charities and NGOs, will have a significant impact on the communities which will benefit from it. This is Microvolunteering: short term, low commitment, bite-sized actions suited to your lifestyle.
Microvolunteering is getting popular in Australia, Spain, the US and the UK. You can find ideas on the help from home website, an association that promotes microvolunteering actions to increase volunteering participation rates throughout the world. Whether it becomes the future of giving or not, it certainly helps nonprofits to connect with a big number and a wide variety of volunteers to ultimately find new ways to crowdsource their campaigns.
But what can we possibly do in 10 minutes?
Play Games, Donate Rice – FreeRice is a non-profit website that is owned by and supports the United Nations World Food Programme. They host a word definition game on the their home-page, for each correct answer, 10 grains of rice are donated to hungry people, at no cost for you, by the sponsors who advertise on the site. When you get an answer right the next one is going to be harder. You can play individually or in groups, and you can compete over different subjects. The game is available in English, French, Italian, Korean and Spanish. For easy access you don’t need to sign up, but if you do, you can track totals, and create or join groups. Give it a try, it’s fun!
Donate A Tweet To A Cause – JustCoz is a platform that allows you to donate a tweet a day for a cause that matters to you. Just choose one of the many initiatives featured on the website, click on the donate button and an automatic Tweet will reach your followers and amplify the message of the charity or non-profit you are supporting.
Classify Galaxies – help the astronomers at Galaxy Zoo studying images of galaxies to understand how they are formed. Click on Begin Classifying and you will see the photo of a galaxy taken by NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope. Is the galaxy simply smooth and rounded, with no sign of a disk? Does the galaxy have a bulge at its center? is there anything odd about this galaxy? And so on. Each galaxy is seen by different participants, with multiple independent classifications of the same object the astronomers will be able to assess how reliable the results are. Luckily you might be among the first people in history to see each of the galaxies you’re asked to classify. No experience in astronomy required!
We will continue to be fascinated by reading stories like the one of Maria who volunteered in a dental clinic in Togo and that one of Tommaso who spent three weeks in Uganda for an education project. They will leave us thinking “I wish I could give such a contribution, but I don’t have enough time/ enough money/enough courage…”
Well, you don’t need a lot of time, neither money nor courage, to microvolunteer. If you can spare 10 minutes on your bus ride to work, while waiting at the doctor or for your girlfriend to get ready to go out, you can start making your contribution today!
