AVIAT (Associazione Volontari Italiani Amici Togo)
We recently got introduced to AVIAT Onlus, an Italian nonprofit operating in Togo.
Maria, Tom‘s very good friend, is a dentist and she decided to take 3 weeks off to go to Togo to volunteer there.
She helped out the dental clinic visiting and taking care of more than 150 patients in 3 weeks.
We are looking forward to getting more insights about her life changing experience!
Aviat Onlus is an Italian nonprofit organization founded in 2005. It includes doctors, nurses and volunteers to support Togo, one of the poorest countries in Africa, and is directly connected to the Togo NGO, VAME (Vision Action pour un Miex Etre – an organization of doctors, teachers, agronomists, and economists). VAME’s goal is to actively help Togo by:
sending health equipment and humanitarian aid
sending healthcare personnel and volunteers to operate on health and humanitarian projects, carrying on medical check-ups, ultrasounds, vaccination, and free dispensing of medicines
continuous fulfillment of a distant adoption project that allows adopted children to benefit of healthy nutrition and scholastic education
constant attention to VAME’s requests and needs: malaria prophylaxis , HIV prevention, building of new medical centers. And doctors and volunteers to put these projects into practice
creating job opportunities for Togolese youngsters through small works (tools supply) and not-refundable microcredit
spreading a culture of solidarity, through events that promote Africa and Togo in particular (i.e. school and group meetings).
Since 2005 AVIAT has reached tangible results. Among these, the building in 2006 of “Casa degli Angeli ” (Angels’ home or Maison des Anges), that hosts volunteers and is used as a medical centre. And the building of the Togoville dispensary in 2008. Besides, in 2012, the Togo Health Minister, Charles Kondi Agba, and the Lions governors of 108 TB camp in Italy and 403 TB camp in Togo have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to build an eye surgery operating theatre at Lomè hospital, the capital of Togo.
AVIAT has different and ambitious projects on their list.
The projects in Togo include vaccinations, HIV prevention, dispatch of medicines and of healthcare personnel for dental and eye projects, and supply of water purification tools. Moreover, there is a project on ‘Ethical tourism’ to convey Africa’s and Togo’s reality. Other projects include the creation of an affordable internet point for the inhabitants of the Kegué district in Lomè, the ‘adoption’ of a dispensary or a nurse, in order to guarantee the minimum health service, and supply of solar panels (in collaboration with ABN A&B NETWORK, in Perugia).
The projects in Italy include solidarity campaigns in schools with students from Imola, a continuous research of new financial sponsors, and the creation of a more efficient network of volunteers already serving in Africa.
It is also possible to get involved in distance adoption. More info are available on their (italian) website.
To have a closer view on the organization and to be updated you can also follow the AVIAT journal from Togo (exclusively in Italian at the moment).
