At least 18 people, including four children, have been killed in flooding on the Italian island of Sardinia after a cyclone and heavy rain.
A number of people are reported missing after rivers burst their banks. Cars were swept away and bridges collapsed. The area around the north-eastern city of Olbia was worst-hit – in some places the water was up to 3m (10ft) deep. Thousands have had to abandon their homes.
Funds raised will be sent to The Italian Red Cross. Its intervention has been immediate, with about 100 volunteers and ambulances to rescue the population trapped by water and mud.
Essential goods are mostly needed: food and drinking water.
Our Funder Tom is Italian and has a lot of friends in Sardinia. Alba is one of them. She works for Google and she is promoting this initiative. The convenience is that the final amount is going to be matched by Alba’s employer, so if you donate €10 they will become €20!
You can donate using Paypal (or credit cards if you don’t have a Paypal account). Cash or bank transfer are available options as well.
